What I Lost To ALS

Over the last few weeks my Facebook and Instagram feeds have been filled with people accepting and challenging friends in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.  I’ve watched videos of friends, family, strangers and celebrities, some have made me laugh and some have left a bad taste in my mouth because it seemed their purpose was to only make a video that would go viral. I am beginning to get a sense that the message has been getting lost in the entertaining ways people have been getting wet. When I watch each video I see a special face, the face of someone I have lost to ALS.

My brother Nick, recently posted on Facebook his thoughts and I hope he doesn’t mind as I share them:
Hey yall, been trying to keep my mouth shut about this but I tired of hearing the hate. My grandmother was diagnosed with ALS when I had just turned 18. I don't know how many of you know the particulars of this disease, so for all you who question whether this is a worthy "trend" or not I'll explain. First, her she lost her speech, then the use of her hands, followed by her arms and legs. Basically a complete inability to move any part of her body. All while completely conscious and fully aware of what was happening. Eventually she passed when her lungs failed to do the job. This was a 3 month process and she passed in our family home. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Point= Please stop the hate, keep the negativity to yourself.

I was so proud of him for standing up for one of the greatest women I’ve know, our grandmother Josephine Veronica Pack.

Grandma and I when I was probably about 4. We were on a road trip to Mexico.

I was newly married when Grandma received her diagnosis; so my life was not as turned upside down as my parents and brother's was, but Jim & I did what we could to give them each a break from care giving.  Our times with Grandma involved keeping her company, helping her if she needed anything and to feed her from a feeding tube that had been inserted in her stomach. What I remember of that time more then anything was the frustration I could see in her eyes when she was trying to communicate a need and I was unable to understand the message. She wanted to speak so badly but her body just wouldn’t let her. I can picture those times so vividly and my heart breaks every time.

I was very lucky to be able to grow up living with my grandmother and having the privilege of hearing her wisdom daily until the day I was married in 1994.
My favorite lesson from childhood was to never leave the dinner table to use the restroom because your plate might get cleared while your gone. She did it to me every time.  Another dinner time lesson was Grandma always has your back and if you were forced to sit at the dinner table until you to ate all your peas, you’d be sure if you sat long enough and Mom and Dad were gone, Grandma would take care of it for you. I loved that.  My grandma helped me when I was learning to tap dance. Many did not know but she was a professional dancer as a child and young teen. Finally, my grandmother also taught me to never share your dirty laundry in public. I’m sure if she were here today she would be very disappointed in the private, slanderous, unfiltered posts that can be found on Facebook everyday.

One of the last pictures I have of Grandma before she was diagnosed with ALS. This was my wedding day in April 1994.

My final memory of my Grandmother was a couple days before she died. I had bought her a teddy bear dressed up like an old fashioned granny for Mother’s Day. It was suggested to give it to her early due to the chance that she might not make it to Mother’s Day. I remember giving her the bear and for the first time in a long time we were able to communicate. In her eyes I saw joy, peace and love. I knew she knew I loved her and I knew she loved me too. She died on Mother’s Day evening in 1995.

My grandmother meant the world to me and when I was able to name my daughter Alexa Josephine I felt I finally had my chance to honor her. Today with this post I am able to do it again.

So for all who have done the ice bucket challenge, what ever your intentions, I thank you for bringing awareness to this disease. Please remember for every face you see cringing in the cold water there is a also a face of someone battling ALS.

I leave you with this final prayer:
May the Lord watch over those suffering with ALS and their families and to bring wisdom and knowledge to those finding a cure.
Saint John Paul II, Pray for Us.

Until next time,
Karri

Five Favorites - The Photo Edition

The beginning of this week I was away on a retreat with my co-workers.  Together we reflected on the successes of the  year and began planning for the future of the our church. Today I would like to share with you my five favorite views from the last three days, taken on my iPhone and edited with my VSCOcam app.

The view from my room!

Here is another angle of the view from my room.

On Tuesday morning in ran on the beach.  I found a perfect spot on the rocks to enjoy the beauty that was in front of me.

The backyard near our meeting area had a lovely prayer garden.

We had a spectacular dinner at a resturant called. Shadow Brook. If you are ever in Capitola you must eat there.

Hope you enjoyed the photos from my retreat. Today I'm headed home. As beautiful and as peaceful as this time was, I missed the messy, noisy, chaos of my home.

Until next time,
Karri

Five Favorites - The Thankfulness Edition

Wednesday's at Moxie Wife, Hallie asks bloggers to share their five favorites of the week. This week I'm please to share the 5 things that made me thankful for the treasures in my life

My Bishop
I attend a mass of thanksgiving for the Canonization of Saint John XXIII and Saint John Paul II. At mass Bishop Barber had so much fun blessing all of us with holy water. He smiled like the cat that ate the canary when he was able to douse the parishioners and they jumped. I just love how truly humbled he is to be our Bishop.

Alexa's Language
Alexa has her own language, not to far from our own but so cute when she uses her words to describe things.
McDonalds Restaurant is Old McDungles
Her Sophie the First Headphones are called her charger
Polka dots are Colka Dots

Late Start Wednesdays
Twice a month Jacob's school starts an hour and fifteen minutes later then the usual start time. These days I can actually have a peaceful morning and actually eat breakfast at home.

Summer Shape Up
Today was my 1st day of training for the Summer Shape Up challenge at my gym. I'm teamed up with a group of fabulous ladies. We are competing against another team to see which team can loose the most weight in 6 weeks. Wish me luck. (by the way - that is not me in the picture but I hope to be able to bend like that someday.)

Digital Scrapbooking Time
Scrapbooking time is rare right now, so I was thankful I had a chance to create this page to celebrate Jim and my time together for our 20th anniversary.

Until next time,
Karri

John Paul II and What He Means to Me

On April 2005 I remember hearing the sad news that Pope John Paul II had passed away. I remember watching the funeral coverage on TV and thinking how the world had stopped for that moment to remember a man who meant so much to what seemed so many people. People accept me, sure I was sad but that was really it.
During this time this was all I knew of John Paul II:
  • ·         He helped bring an end to communism
  • ·         Someone tried to kill him
  • ·         He was friends with Mother Teresa
  • ·         He visited San Francisco once and said mass at Candlestick park

and finally it was his request to my dear friend and priest Fr. Miles Riley to be in Rome that kept Fr. Miles from officiating my wedding. (Don’t worry I never held a grudge on that, I actually was honored to know that only the Pope could keep Father away from my special day.)

Bottom line was this - He was the Pope of my generation yet I knew very little about him.
When I came to work at Holy Rosary, the youth group was planning a pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. I had heard about World Youth Day but had never know the history of this week long celebration of faith and felt that if I was going to take a group of teens I had better know what I was getting into.

That was when I discovered the Pope that would soon become my patron, my go to guy in heaven and my guide in building my marriage and in raising my children.

I discovered John Paul’s love for the youth and his desire to include them in the faith not just as the future of the church but as its present, which was why he initiated World Youth Day in 1984. Oh how I wish I had heard his words of encouragement as a young teen.

John Paul taught me forgiveness as I learned that the story of the attempt on his life didn’t end with the convection of his assailant but with his visit to the prison to offer his forgiveness.

Through his teaching on Theology of the Body, I found the tools I need to raise my children to respect themselves and others when faced with the harsh reality of our oversexed culture.

Finally I received the greatest teaching of all, the call and mission of Jim and me as the patrons of our own Domestic Church.  When we spoke our wedding vows we made a promise to raise our children Catholic, but at ages 23 and 25 we really never knew what that meant other than making sure we attended mass and signed our kids up for CCD when the time came. John Paul taught that it goes much further: “By virtue of their ministry of educating, parents are through the witness of their lives the first heralds of the gospel for their children. Furthermore, by praying with their children, by reading the word of God with them and by introducing them...into the Body of Christ—both the Eucharistic and the ecclesial body—they become fully parents, in that they are begetters not only of bodily life, but also of the life that through the Spirit's renewal flows from the cross and resurrection of Christ" (Familiaris Consortio, #39).”

Are we perfect at this? Absolutely not, but I know that as we continue to learn more, allow the words of John Paul to inspire and guide us and to continually pray for his intersession , we will become the family God intends us to be.

May the Blessings of Our Lord Jesus Christ touch your family this Easter Season. John Paul II, pray for us.

Until next time,
Karri

Once again I am sharing my 5 favorites over at the blog Moxie Wife. This week I want to share my five favorite video's I found on the site Viralvita. I hope you find them as fun and inspirational as I did. (On a side note - I was unable to embed the videos from the Viralvite site directly, so while I found the videos from Viralvite they all came from YouTube.

One of the best displays of sportsmanship I have ever seen.

Number 2 on my list goes to this fun April Fools Prank

3rd up is a powerful video that puts the abortion crisis into perspective.

My 4th video is one teen's story about suicide. This video needs to be shared with every teen and parent you know.

and finally this awesome video created by a father who took a video of his daughter every week for 14 years.

Our One Word - 4 Months Later

When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment, you can say to yourself, 'Oh yes - I already have everything that I really need.'
Dalai Lama

Wise words from Dalai Lama and for the last four months hard words for us to live by.
When Jim first suggested this as our word, I think we were looking to find contentment in our relationships with each other. Mainly we needed to stop nagging each other about housework, cooking, job schedules, homework, etc. We have been doing very successful in having this word define how we treat each other. Our struggle has been in using our word as our lens for other areas of our life.

As I ponder this statement, I don't think we want more, more and more. Nothing we seem to be discontent about involves having more "things" in our life. On the contrary we are actually discontent with the amount of  stuff that is cluttering our home and minds. What we want more of is time together, better health practices for Jim and I and a healthy diet for the entire family.

After four months we have decided this, God gave us this word not as a reminder to always be content but as a goal for us to achieve as we continue through 2014.  It is clear this word will continue to challenge us, disappoint us, and bring us great joy when we finally achieve it. Please keep us in your prayers.

Until next time,
Karri

Stitches!!!!

LOOK DADDY I GOT 2 STITCHES!!!!!!!!

This was the message Alexa sent to Daddy a few days ago. Our little rough and tumble princess had a rough and tumble crash.
According to Jim, Alexa was horsing around in the kitchen and tripped over his shoe and smacked something, we still have no idea what she hit) causing a small puncture type cut at her hair line.
For the rest of the evening we contemplated taking her to emergency. We decided after texting a friend who is an EMT that since the bleeding stopped and she showed zero signs of a concussion  we would wait until the next day to see how it looked.
The next day I sought the opinion of her teachers at preschool, they immediately said, "take her in."
Well after an over 1 hour wait at urgent care (I even had an appointment) the Dr. declared she would need 2 stitches in order for it to heal properly.
Panic set in and not with Alexa..... I was starting to freak out .... I had no idea how she was going to be.... Would she scream - cry - kick - punch - try to run away?
The Dr. called in a nurse for a little help and I honestly said, "I'm not sure if I can handle this." She smiled and took her place at Alexa's legs and asked me to hold her hand while she held the other.
What followed was surprising -
Alexa didn't move an inch, she didn't scream or cry. She just laid back as the Dr. gave her a shot to numb her head then stitched it close.
She was the bravest 3 year old they had ever seen. I was so proud of her and to make myself feel better I took her to McDonalds then to Target to by a new doll. She choose a new Anna doll from Frozen.
This whole adventure makes me wonder. What does God have in store for this little one to have made her so brave at such a young age. Only time will tell.

Until next time,
Karri

It's The Month for Love: Favorite TV Couples

It's almost Valentine's Day and I thought is would be fun to look at some of my favorite TV couples. I enjoy TV and admittedly I probably watch to much. I love a great TV couple and will watch faithfully to see if they ever over come the odds and finally live happily ever after.  Here they are in no particular order:

Chuck and Sara from the TV show Chuck - I was so disappointed when this show was cancelled. They were the unlikely couple who were so perfect together.

Prince Charming and Snow White (David & Mary Margaret) from the show Once Upon a Time, how can I not have the most famous fairy tale couple on the list.

Tony and Ziva from NCIS. I know they never officially became a couple but I had spent so many years routing for them, I had to add them.

Matthew and Lady Mary from Downton Abbey - It took so much for them to finally be together then it was over in one moment. I'm still mourning last season.

Chandler and Monica from Friends. I just loved when the show decided to put them together.

Tom and Lady Sybil from Downtown Abbey  - Lady Sybil was always the rebel in the family. She and Tom fought to be together and it made for TV magic. While the relationship of Matthew and Lady Mary was the love story the show centered most around it was Lady Sybil and Tom won my heart.

Who are your favorite TV couples?

Until next time,
Karri

5 Favorites While Sitting in the Jury Room

Each Wednesday I plan to participate in the Five Favorites link party on the Moxie Wife  blog.

As I'm writing to you today, I am sitting in the county courthouse fulfilling my civic duty. That is praying that I don't get picked for a jury. I'm just playing. I will admit on one hand it could be fun and exciting like living my own real life version of Law and Order. On the other hand, serving on a jury would put a huge kink in my well oiled household.........
Wait sorry dozed for a minute..... I mean my fly by the seat of your pants, just make it to school before the final bell kind of household. (The first was a lovely thought though.)

In honor of my 8 to 5 gig in the jury waiting room here are my five favorites while I'm here:

1. The table and chair I found next to one of the only electrical outlets in the room. I'll be able to pin on Pinterest all day.

2. The lovely lady who joined me at my table thus allowing me to always have someone saving my seat. I did have a huge cup of coffee before getting here.

3. The brand new courthouse (opened in 2010) with horrible acoustics. I have been able to hear everyone's cell phone conversations including the man who if chosen for a murder trial will give his friend his badge so he can attend instead. I'm sure the man was joking but you never know.

4. The movie we had to watch giving us instructions on the importance of a  juror and walked us through the whole trial process.  I think we could have watched an episode of Law and Order instead or at least I think Sam Waterston should have played the roll of  the attorney. Maybe they could have added the dramatic gavel sound at the intro. Actually when the movie first began we had audio but no video which caused one man to comment, "So this is what our taxes paid for."

5. And finally the opportunity to see how our system really works. Without the dramatic music, gavel thumps and pretty faces. (You can't deny Law and Order has the best looking prosecutors.)

Even though the day I received my summons, I wished I would be in the excused group or even the come later in the day group and with all kidding aside, I do feel a sense of honor sitting here, waiting and waiting and waiting.

When I can I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Until next time,
Karri

14 Goals for 2014

This month I have been enjoying the daily digital scrapbooking challenges on The Lilypad. Since I am a Photoshop Elements newbie, this month has allowed me to discover new and exciting techniques. I have been sharing my layout's each week. You can find them at MOC Part 1 and MOC Part 2

Challenge 14 was to create a layout highlighting 14 goals for the year. I was very apprehensive about actually creating a list. I've shared before how awful I am with resolutions so I wasn't to excited about creating a list of 14 things to fail at, remember I'm a One Word kind of gal. After much thought I came to realize a few things, first if I didn't complete the challenge I would fail at my goal of completing all 31 challenges. I also figured that if I went the entire year without setting small goals for myself, I would end the year having not completed anything at all. With this in mind I got to work.

Here is my finished layout and my list of goals:

Keep me in your prayers.

Until next time,
Karri

After 22 months and 14 days I have a new smile and I couldn't be happier.

Here I am 22 months ago. The day I had my braces put on. This was before the pain set in.

Here I am on Wednesday - brace free.

So what do you think?
