Alternative Uses for Baking Soda

This year I have been on a search for products that can help me to eliminate the use of chemicals around my family. One of my most versatile and inexpensive finds has been baking soda. I already use it for baking and I always have a box in my fridge and freezer to keep thing fresh. In my quest to compile a list of alternative uses for around the home, I searched various website. This by no means is all of the uses. If you would like to view the sites I found, follow these links:

1. Why not make your own toothpaste by mixing 1/2 teaspoon with peroxide paste
2. It's an antacid - I think I'd prefer Tums but if I was up late one night with heartburn and I was out of Tums, I will at least have this alternative remedy
3. Freshen your sponges in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking soda in 1 quart of warm water.
4. Clean coffee and tea pots - you can even run it through your Keurig and Tassimo coffee machines
5. Add a boost to your liquid laundry detergent
6. Deodorize your refrigerator and freezer - They even have boxes you can purchase for just this purpose
7. Deodorize your trashcan by sprinkling a little on the bottom before adding the bag
8. Pour some down your sink drains
9. Add a box to your closet  - I'm anxious to try this idea
10. Add a box in the cupboard
11. It can be used to put out a grease fire - This is a good tip.
12. Clean your hairbrush and comb in a water and baking soda mixture
13. Sprinkle on your carpet and vacuum after 15 minutes
14. Clean your kids toys using 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water. I love this idea in place of using a  bleach solution
15. Make a clay with water and use as a spot acne treatment.
16. How about underarm deodorant?- I'm not sure it will help with perspiration though
17. Use on rashes or pesky insect bites. It should help the itch and pain
18. Add to your vase of cut flower so they will last longer
19. For an easy toilet cleaner, fill the bowl with one cup, have it sit for an hour then flush
20. A spoonful in your dishwater makes scrubbing dishes easier.

Let me know what you use baking soda for.

Until next time,
Karri
